Term 1 Favorites

🌟Term 1 Favorites🌟 ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
We are at the end of Term 1, and it has been a great start to 9th and 5th grades!
⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣Here are *some* things we loved in Term 1. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
🏜️ Ecology⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Both the Ecology Bundle from @learningwfriends and the Ecology: A Study of Biomes unit by Jaime Gravitt (Etsy) have been additions to this science stream that have accomplished two things: ⁣⁣⁣
1) Made This Subject Accessible for My Youngest⁣⁣⁣
2) Provided a Contextual Reprieve From Textbook Reading for My Oldest ⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣
🌎 Climatology ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
The Renewable Energy Unit Study from Books and Willows has been fun and provided many ideas for further exploration. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
We also enjoy “Understanding the Climate Crisis” from Paper Pie (love this series), and “What a Waste” from DK. ⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣
📝 “Martin Rising” by Andrea and Brian Pinkney. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
This is a poetic biographical account of the last year of MLK’s life, and it brought us each to tears more than once. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I finished the term going back in time a few years in MLK’s life by reading “Let the Children March” by Monica Clark-Robinson and it prompted great discussion. ⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣
🦌 Delighting in Animals: Senses, Defenses, and Killer Instincts ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Special Studies nearly always makes this list, and these units are always (truly) a delight. This animal focused unit was a HIT. ⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣
🐴 Career Studies ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Sheldon LOVES the “That’s a Job” series, and this year’s “I Like Animals” edition is a highlight of his week. ⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣
🌍 Africa is Not a Country by Dipo Faloyin ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
We’re using many resources for our study of Africa this year, but this is a book EVERYONE should read. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣
💥 Cartooning⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Teddy is loving the biographical interviews in “Comics Confidential” by Leonard Marcus, Sheldon is enjoying “The Essential Calvin and Hobbes”, and we’re all enjoying our lessons from “Art for Kids: Cartooning”. ⁣

🕍 Delighting in the World: World Religions ⁣

Utilizing my curriculum this term for our study of world religions was particularly special (and emotional) for me. ⁣
This unit was a challenge to write, is something I’m proud of, and illuminated a subject that isn’t new to us in a new way for my kids.⁣
